5The map

How to move the map, find places, and use every layer.

5.1Move and zoom the map

You can move the map with your fingers, a mouse, or the buttons on the screen.

To do thisOn a phoneWith a mouse
Move the mapDrag one finger.Drag with the left button held down.
Zoom inSpread two fingers apart, or tap twice fast.Roll the wheel forward, or click twice fast.
Zoom outPinch two fingers together.Roll the wheel back.
Zoom one stepTap + or − at the bottom right.Click + or − at the bottom right.
Turn the mapTap a round arrow at the bottom right. In 3D, twist two fingers.Click a round arrow. In 3D, drag with the right button.
Tilt the mapTap the double arrow up. In 3D, drag two fingers up or down.Click the double arrow up. In 3D, hold Shift and roll the wheel.

Each tap on a round arrow turns the map a little. The other round arrow turns it back. Leaving 3D also puts north back at the top.

NoteOn the flat map, two fingers don't turn the map. That stops it turning by accident.

Far out, pins close together join into one circle with a number. The number says how many places are inside. Zoom in and the circle splits into single pins.

5.3Find where you are

Locate shows you where you are on the map. It's in the right-hand column. On a phone there's also a crosshair picture in the top bar.

  1. Tap Locate.
  2. If your phone asks to share your location, tap Allow.

The map moves to you and a blue dot marks where you are. A small arrow on the dot shows which way you face. The dot moves as you move. The map itself stays still, so you can look around.

Sometimes the phone only knows roughly where you are. Then the map zooms out a bit and a note says so.

On a phone, a mountain and a number may show at the top left. That's how high you are, in feet. It comes from your phone's own location reading, so it can be a little off.

5.4Press and hold the map

Press and hold any spot on the map for a second. A menu opens there. With a mouse, click the right button instead.

If you press on a pin, the menu uses that place and its name. A quick tap on a pin opens its card instead.

The top of the menu changes with your route. The bottom part is always the same.

NoteNearby services only moves the map in close. To see fuel or toilets, turn them on in Layers.

5.5Place cards

Tap any pin to open its card. A green ring marks the place you tapped. On a phone, the card sits at the bottom of the screen.

A campsite card can show these things, when the app knows them:

  • The name, the kind of place, and Open or Closed.
  • A Save button under the name.
  • The place's own website and phone number, as big buttons.
  • What's there, like toilets, water, showers and power.
  • Fee, bookings, opening hours, and whether RVs and trailers fit.
  • Where the facts came from, and when they were checked.
  • What other people have said, and a way to add your own.
  • Counts of campsites, fuel, shops, water and toilets within 12 miles.
  • How good the phone signal may be.
  • A 7 day weather forecast.
  • Buttons for directions, Google Maps and reviews.

Tap a name the map draws, like a peak, lake or town. You get a short card with the name, the kind of place, and directions.

Tap the X, or tap an empty part of the map, to close a card.

NoteA grey or empty line means the app doesn't know that fact. It doesn't mean no.

Step by step, with pictures: Find a place to stop for the night · Book your bed straight with the owner

5.6Topo and Satellite

The base map is the picture under all the pins. There are two.

  • Topo is a drawn map. It shows roads, towns, rivers and parks. Zoom in and it adds lines that show the height of the land. These are called contour lines.
  • Satellite shows photos from satellites and planes, from Esri. You see the land as it looks from above.
  1. Close the Menu.
  2. Tap Topo at the bottom left. It changes to Sat.
  3. Tap Sat to go back to Topo.

You can also pick Topo or Satellite in the Layers tab. Look for Base Map near the end.

NoteSatellite pictures need signal, unless you've downloaded them in the Offline tab. The pictures in this guide all use Topo.

5.73D and the Height slider

3D stands the hills and valleys up, so you can see how steep the land is.

  1. Tap 2D at the bottom left. It turns green and reads 3D.
  2. Use the double arrows to tilt the view, and the round arrows to turn it.
  3. Tap 3D to go back to the flat map.

In 3D, a Height slider sits above the Topo button. Slide it to make the hills taller or flatter. At 1x, hills are their true height. The app starts at 1.3x and goes up to 3x. It remembers your choice.

In 3D, a compass shows at the top left. Tap it to face north again.

The map always opens flat. Tap 2D whenever you want the hills.

Step by step, with pictures: Plan and drive with 3D maps

5.8Full and Reset

Full fills the whole screen with the app. It hides the browser's own bars. Tap Full again to bring them back.

NoteiPhones can't do this, so the Full button doesn't show on an iPhone.

Reset flies the map back to where it was when the app opened. That's your own area, if your phone shared your location then. Otherwise it's the western United States.

5.9The scale bar

The scale bar sits at the bottom right, under the zoom buttons. It's a short line with a distance on it, like 500 ft or 2 mi. The real ground under that line is that long. It changes as you zoom.

5.10Turn layers on and off

A layer is one kind of thing on the map, like fuel stations or fires. Each layer has a switch in the Layers tab. Green means on.

  1. Tap Menu.
  2. Tap Layers.
  3. Scroll to the layer you want.
  4. Tap its switch.

The app remembers your switches for next time. Fewer layers make a clearer, faster map.

Some rows have a small tag. LIVE means the facts come in fresh while you have signal. WEEKLY means they're updated each week. Overlay means lines or colour drawn over the map. Topo means it only shows on the Topo map. New means a recent addition. Trial means a layer we're still trying out.

Some layers only show when you're zoomed in. Their row then says zoom in.

NoteMost layers come from public maps and agencies. A place missing from the map may still be there, and a place on the map may have changed. Trust the sign at the gate.

5.11Every layer, one by one

This table lists every switch that puts something on the map. They're grouped as the Layers tab groups them. On at start means the switch is on when you first open the app.
